A Grade II listed former chapel in South Wales is heading to auction with a guide price of just £1.
Ebenezer Chapel in Trecynon, Aberdare, dates back to 1811 and was once at the centre of the Christian revivalist movement in South Wales.
The substantial detached building on Ebenezer Street was rebuilt in 1859 but closed as a place of worship in 2009.
Partial renovation work has since been carried out and the property previously secured planning permission for conversion into five flats, although that consent has now lapsed.
DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL
The two-storey chapel occupies a site of approximately 0.23 acres among established residential housing and includes a forecourt, land to the side and rear, a former graveyard and detached garage.
Sean Roper of Paul Fosh Auctions says: “This large former chapel which also has a domestic-sized single garage in the sought-after location of Trecynon, Aberdare is listed for auction with a guide price of just £1.
“The property has previously had planning for conversion to five flats. That permission has now lapsed but could also suit other types of residential or commercial or community use, subject to obtaining planning permission.”
ALTERNATIVE USES
The property is around half a mile from Aberdare town centre and a short walk from Aberdare Park.
Roper adds: “We understand the property was last used as a place of worship circa 2009 and the building may also suit alternative uses such as community use, day nursery or training centre etc subject to necessary planning consent.”
The chapel will be among more than 100 lots offered in Paul Fosh Auctions’ online sale, which begins on 6 October and ends on 8 October.
