Primary school pupils from Harworth have been given an insight into the world of housebuilding after visiting Harron Homes’ Simpson Park development as part of an initiative designed to promote construction safety and careers in the industry.
Children from St Patrick’s Primary School took part in the educational visit, organised by Harworth Group, which is leading the wider regeneration of the Simpson Park site in Harworth and Bircotes. The day included activities hosted by Harron Homes and Vistry Homes to showcase how new communities are created.
At Harron Homes’ development, Site Manager Scott Henderson delivered a health and safety session explaining how construction sites operate and why active developments should never be entered by members of the public.
The pupils also explored one of the developer’s showhomes through an interactive treasure hunt led by the marketing team, learning about the different stages involved in preparing a new-build home for occupation.
VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY

“Health and safety affects every part of building a new home, and the children were really engaged throughout the session. Visits like this are a valuable opportunity to help young people understand what happens on a construction site and why it is so important to remain outside the boundaries of an active development.”
Matt Barker, Regional Managing Director at Harron Homes North Midlands, said the visit also highlighted the range of careers involved in delivering new homes, while St Patrick’s Headteacher Mary Jenkinson said the experience helped bring classroom learning to life.
Joshua Johnson, Communities and Placemaking Coordinator at Harworth, added that the initiative demonstrated the variety of skills involved in creating new communities while encouraging pupils to think about future career opportunities.
