Community-created artwork unveiled at Berkeley’s Highcroft development

A new public artwork inspired by the ideas of almost 800 people from across Wallingford has been unveiled at Berkeley’s Highcroft development following a year-long community engagement programme.

The ‘World of Wallingford’ Globe was created in partnership with public art specialists Planet Art and reflects the town’s history, landscape and community through a series of images wrapped around the sculpture by the River Thames.
The project brought together residents aged between two and 90, including pupils from five local schools, visitors to Wallingford Museum, community groups, Highcroft residents and people living in assisted accommodation.

Participants contributed through workshops, drawing sessions, model making and discussions, helping shape the final design before it was completed by Midlands-based artists Julie Edwards and Ron Thompson of Planet Art.

COMMUNITY LIFE

The finished sculpture incorporates references to Wallingford Castle, the town bridge, the River Thames, archaeological discoveries made at the Highcroft site, local wildlife, agriculture, industry and community life.

The initiative also supported the development of emerging creative talent, with a local artist from Ayres Yard Studios working alongside Planet Art throughout the consultation and design process.

Stephen Kirwan, Managing Director at Berkeley, says: “This project has been about working closely with the local community from the outset, ensuring that the artwork reflects the character of Wallingford and the people who live here.

“The level of engagement we’ve seen, across schools, community groups and residents, has been a key part of shaping something that will have a lasting presence at Highcroft.”

Julie Edwards, of Planet Art, adds: “The consultation process has been central to the development of the piece. By working with such a wide range of groups, we’ve been able to build a rich picture of what Wallingford means to different people, and to translate that into a design that reflects those shared ideas.”
