Almost half of dog owners would reject dream home over their pet

Almost half of UK dog owners would reject their dream home if the property failed to meet their pet’s needs, according to research highlighted by developer Berkeley.

Some 45% say they would walk away from an otherwise ideal property if it was unsuitable for their dog, demonstrating the influence pets can have on buyers’ property decisions.
Research published by Guide Dogs also finds 82% of dog owners expecting to move say their pet’s needs and happiness would influence their choice of property.

More than half – 55% – would choose a spacious garden for their dog over having a walk-in wardrobe.

PET-FRIENDLY HOMES

Berkeley highlighted the findings as it marked World Animal Day yesterday (4 October) at its Glasswater Locks development in Birmingham.

The developer invited resident dog Gracie (main picture) to tour the scheme from a dog’s perspective, reflecting this year’s World Animal Day theme of ‘See the World Through Their Eyes’.

Berkeley says pets are increasingly being considered within the design of landscaped gardens and communal spaces across its developments in the Midlands and South of England.

At Glasswater Locks, residents have access to the Digbeth Branch Canal towpath and a landscaped garden, providing nearby dog-walking space.

Stephen Kirwan, Managing Director at Berkeley, says: “For many buyers, a pet’s needs are an important part of choosing a home.

“Glasswater Locks combines green and blue spaces with practical amenities that fit easily into residents’ daily routines, including dog-walking routes on the doorstep.

“It has been a pleasure to let Gracie lead the tour for World Animal Day and show the development from a perspective that matters to so many households. We also have residents with cats, and our aim is to create welcoming homes and shared spaces for owners and pets alike.”
