More than half of people moving home prioritise unpacking over updating important driving documents, with one in seven admitting they have never changed the address on their driving licence following a move.
Research from temporary car insurance provider Dayinsure found 52% of movers put unpacking ahead of checking their driving documents and insurance details.
The study of 2,000 UK adults found 40% update their driving licence address within a month of moving, but 14% said they had never done so.
Drivers are legally required to tell the DVLA when their address changes and can be fined up to £1,000 for failing to update their driving licence.
INSURANCE DETAILS ALSO OVERLOOKED
Home movers appear to be quicker at notifying their car insurer, with half updating their policy details within a week.
However, a third (33%) said they waited between a month and a year, while 6% admitted never updating the address on their policy.
A change of address can affect an insurer’s assessment of risk and motorists should tell their provider when they move. Failure to provide accurate information could also affect their cover or the handling of a subsequent claim.
The findings come as the end of August traditionally represents a busy period for moving home.
‘EASY FOR IMPORTANT ADMIN TO SLIP’
Chris Bibby, CEO of Dayinsure, says: “Moving home can be a stressful experience; it is easy for important admin, such as updating your driving licence and car insurance, to slip down the priority list.
“However, keeping the DVLA informed about any changes to your address is a legal requirement and should be done as soon as possible after moving.
“You should notify your car insurance provider of your change of address once you’ve moved in, as delaying doing this can invalidate your cover.
“Add both tasks to the top of your moving checklist, alongside bank details and energy provider. Failure to do so could result in fines, penalty points and invalid cover.”
