House of Lords committee invites public to shape next built environment inquiry

The House of Lords Built Environment Committee is inviting members of the public, businesses and organisations to help shape its future work by submitting ideas for its next parliamentary inquiry.

The committee has launched its first-ever public Call for Ideas, seeking proposals on emerging, underrepresented and innovative issues affecting the built environment. Suggestions can be submitted by individuals or organisations and could influence the committee’s future programme of work, with particular interest in ideas that have the potential to make a meaningful difference to towns, cities and local communities.
The cross-party committee is responsible for scrutinising government policy across housing, planning, transport and infrastructure.

Through a programme of select committee inquiries, it gathers evidence from industry experts, academics and stakeholders before making recommendations to ministers aimed at improving the UK’s built environment.

TANGIBLE DIFFERENCE

The committee is encouraging submissions that focus on policy areas not currently being examined elsewhere in Parliament and where government action could make a tangible difference.

It expects to begin work on the successful inquiry in October, with contributors invited to propose ideas that can be explored over a series of evidence sessions and lead to practical recommendations. The deadline for submissions is 13 July.

POINTS OF VIEW

Lord Gascoigne (main picture), Chair of the House of Lords Built Environment Committee, says: “The Built Environment Committee wants to hear your views.

“We are interested in hearing about new, underrepresented and innovative policy areas, particularly if this idea could make a big difference to the built environment in your local neighbourhood, town or area.

“If you have an idea about what we should look into, let us know what it is.”

Anyone can submit their ideas, either on behalf of an organisation, or as an individual. The deadline for submissions is 23:59 on Monday 13 July 2026.
