The future of one of London’s most famous streets is up for debate following the launch of a public consultation on ambitious plans to transform Fleet Street into a greener, safer and more pedestrian-friendly destination.
Backed by a £9 million investment from the City of London Corporation and a further £500,000 from Fleet Street Quarter Business Improvement District (BID), the proposals form part of a long-term regeneration programme designed to modernise Fleet Street while respecting its historic character.
The consultation presents two potential design options, both aimed at improving conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users, while creating a more attractive public realm through the introduction of planting, seating and wider pavements.
Under both options, Fleet Street would gain at least three tennis courts’ worth of additional pavement space, alongside improved cycling infrastructure and new green spaces.
OPTION ONE
However, it is the more ambitious Option One that has won the backing of Fleet Street Quarter BID.
The proposal would significantly widen pavements, introduce extensive planting and seating areas, and prioritise walking, wheeling and cycling. It would also involve changes to vehicle movements along Fleet Street, creating what supporters describe as a major opportunity to reshape the street as a destination rather than simply a transport corridor.
Option Two offers a more modest intervention, retaining all through traffic while still providing additional space for pedestrians and cyclists and introducing limited greening measures.
The transformation comes as Fleet Street undergoes a period of significant redevelopment. The area is expected to welcome around 40,000 additional workers and visitors each day over the next five years as 33 new and refurbished developments deliver around 7 million sq ft of commercial and civic space.
Major schemes include the City of London Corporation’s Salisbury Square development and the new City of London Police headquarters.
CITY RENAISSANCE

Lady Lucy French, Chief Executive of Fleet Street Quarter BID, says: “Fleet Street is one of the world’s most famous streets; historic, resilient and constantly evolving. We are witnessing a renaissance across the area, and this transformation represents a vital opportunity to create a public realm that reflects Fleet Street’s significance, character and future potential.
“We strongly believe Option One represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine one of London’s most iconic streets, transforming Fleet Street into a dynamic civic, cultural and commercial destination that celebrates its rich heritage while embracing a more sustainable future.”
VIBRANT DESTINATION

Mike Fairmaner, Head of Placemaking at Fleet Street Quarter BID, adds: “Option One delivers the boldest vision for Fleet Street: significantly improved accessibility, and a more welcoming environment for people to spend time in, not simply pass through.
“This is about more than physical improvements. It is about creating a healthier, more vibrant and economically successful destination that celebrates Fleet Street’s heritage while embracing a sustainable future for the City.”
The City of London Corporation and Fleet Street Quarter BID have appointed award-winning landscape architecture practice Bradley-Hole Schoenaich Landscape to lead the design work.
The consultation runs until 27 July, with businesses, residents, workers and visitors invited to help shape the future of one of London’s most historic thoroughfares.
