Alicante tops Brits’ overseas property wish list

Spain continues to dominate British holiday home demand with Alicante emerging as the most sought-after destination, new research shows.

Analysis of more than 1,000 episodes of A Place in the Sun by ERE Property found the Spanish province featured most frequently, appearing in 60 episodes.
In total, 127 locations were analysed, with Spain accounting for the vast majority of demand.

Almeria ranked second, featuring in 57 episodes, followed closely by the Costa del Sol Occidental with 56. Malaga (43) and Murcia (34) completed the top five.

NINE OUT OF 10

Spain accounted for nine of the top 10 locations, with Faro in Portugal the only non-Spanish entry, ranking eighth with 28 appearances.

At a regional level, Andalucia was the most popular, featuring in 240 episodes, followed by the Comunitat Valenciana (122) and the Canary Islands (95).

Beyond Spain, France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine ranked fourth with 68 appearances, while Florida placed fifth with 42.

Overall, Spain dominated at a national level, appearing in 550 episodes, well ahead of France (152) and Portugal (54). Italy (52) and Greece (49) completed the top five.

HIDDEN GEMS

Helen Mercer-Jones (main picture, inset), Managing Director of ERE Property, says: “Brits have had a love affair with Spain ever since package holidays existed, and this data shows just how popular the country continues to be, with more episodes on Andalucia alone than Portugal, Italy, Greece and the US combined.

“But with Spain being so popular, that means there are plenty of other hidden gems available to people searching for a holiday home.

“Up and coming areas such as Cyprus are a great place to invest, and we are also seeing increased interest in attractive locations beyond Europe like Bali.”
