Algarve remains top overseas property hotspot for British buyers

The Algarve has retained its position as the most popular overseas destination among British property hunters this summer, latest analysis from Rightmove reveals.

The Portuguese holiday hotspot ranks ahead of Paphos in Cyprus, while Mallorca in Spain completes the top three.
Rightmove’s research suggests familiar destinations offering sunshine, an attractive lifestyle and potentially lower living costs continue to dominate searches by prospective British buyers.

Spain is the most searched-for overseas country overall, followed by France and Italy. Cyprus and Portugal complete the top five.

SPAIN DOMINATES DESTINATION RANKINGS

Spanish locations account for four of the 10 most popular individual destinations. Alicante ranks fifth, followed by the Costa del Sol in sixth and Murcia in ninth.

France also proves popular, with Dordogne taking fourth place and Normandy ranking tenth. The Greek islands of Crete and Corfu appear in seventh and eighth place respectively.

Nick Robertson, Director of Overseas at Rightmove, says: “Whether it’s a permanent move, a second home abroad or more casual summer browsing during the holidays, we’re seeing that many British home-hunters are still drawn to familiar favourite destinations.

“Sunshine, lifestyle, and the cost of living continue to attract many to consider an overseas move.

“For those thinking seriously about buying abroad, summer can be a really key time to explore what different locations have to offer, from the type of homes available to practical considerations of moving overseas or buying a holiday home.

“We often hear from people that they head to Rightmove during their summer break away to see what a permanent move or more regular visit could look like.”

CAREFUL PLANNING

Ian Harris, NAEA Propertymark President, adds: “Demand for overseas property continues to reflect the appeal of warmer climates, lifestyle opportunities and, for some buyers, the prospect of a different pace of life.

“While destinations such as the Algarve, Mallorca and Paphos remain enduring favourites, prospective buyers should ensure their decision is based on careful planning rather than the attraction of a holiday setting alone.

“Understanding local property laws, taxation, residency requirements and ongoing ownership costs is vital before making any commitment.

Working with knowledgeable, regulated property professionals can help consumers make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes when purchasing overseas.”
