United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty sell unique trophy home on the market for the first time in six decades

United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty (UKSIR) has sold a unique studio house located in the desirable St John’s Wood district on Carlton Hill.

The studio, listed for £2.5 million, is part of a Grade II listed building boasting a rich artistic history, having served as the former home of leading Victorian sculptor, Sir George Frampton, and more recently Bratislava-born sculptor Arthur Fleischmann.
Fleischmann pioneered the use of Perspex in sculpture. There are significant parallels between these two sculptors’ attitudes to art and craft, with both integrating their artistic activities into their home lives.

Since Fleischmann’s death in 1990, his wife Joy and son Dominique have remained as residents at Carlton Hill. The property has been owned by this family for 60 years.

Lee Greenfield, Senior Director – Sales, United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty, says: “Carlton Hill is a unique trophy home that had not been on the market for over 60 years, having been in the same family ownership for generations.

“We knew the process needed to be handled delicately and with sentiment. The building is Grade II Listed and also held on a short leasehold title, which had the potential to add a layer of complexity.

“However, Zach Madison (Senior director – sales) and I worked collaboratively across our personal contacts and the Sotheby’s International Realty global network to source a large variety of buyers seeking a property with rarity value and heritage.”

RIGHT BUYER
Bratislava-born sculptor Arthur Fleischmann pioneered the use of Perspex in sculpture.

Greenfield adds: “However, we also needed to ensure that we found the right buyer who could perform and transact within the client’s timescales.

“Fortunately, we managed to achieve this, and both the client and buyer are extremely happy with the outcome.

“It was very important to our client that whoever purchased his family home would continue to preserve the character and charm of the house – almost acting as a custodian of this historical home like he and his family had done, so there were many factors to consider in finding the right buyer.

“This sale just goes to show that even with challenges on both the buying and selling side, there is still significant appetite from buyers, and we are continuing to deliver superb results for our clients.”
