Three quarters of tenants happy with renting

Almost three quarters of tenants in England say they are happy with their current renting experience according to new research from Pepper Money.

The nationally representative survey found 74% of private renters describe themselves as happy, with just 11% reporting dissatisfaction.
Tenant satisfaction was strongest in the South East and South West, where 78% said they were happy, followed by the Midlands at 74%.

The data also highlights a clear link between landlord proximity and tenant experience. Across England, 77% of tenants whose landlord lives within 40 miles of the property reported being happy.

LANDLORD RESPONSIVENESS

That figure falls to 71% where landlords live more than 50 miles away, suggesting local oversight and responsiveness play a role in satisfaction levels.

Three quarters of tenants said they would recommend their landlord to others, pointing to broadly positive day-to-day experiences despite wider regulatory and cost pressures facing the sector.

The findings come as many renters continue to view the private rented sector as a stepping stone. Separate Pepper Money research shows 69% of tenants want to buy a home in the future, with 29% expecting to be financially ready within the next three years.

Paul Adams, Sales Director at Pepper Money, says: “At a time when the UK is facing a chronic undersupply of housing, private landlords continue to play a vital role in bringing much-needed homes to the rental market.

“It is encouraging to see that most tenants report positive renting experiences, particularly where landlords remain closely involved with their properties.

“Our research shows that when landlords are engaged and responsive, tenants feel the benefit directly through well-maintained homes, quicker repairs and a greater sense of stability and trust, all of which help sustain a functioning rental sector.”
