The Beckett recognised for architectural excellence in Tunbridge Wells

The Beckett, one of Tunbridge Wells’ flagship retirement living developments, has been honoured by the Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic Society in its annual awards for outstanding design and architecture.

The recognition places the scheme among a small number of projects judged to make a significant contribution to the town’s built environment.
The Civic Society – founded in 1959 and long regarded as a guardian of local heritage – presents the awards to developments that enhance the architectural and community character of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Now in their 43rd year, the awards are assessed by an expert panel of architects, planners and heritage specialists.

Developed by Elysian Residences and designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, The Beckett delivers 89 retirement apartments alongside a new restaurant, Maxwell. The architecture references more than four centuries of local design tradition while creating a private courtyard garden at the centre of the scheme.

RECOGNISING QUALITY DESIGN

The judging panel reviewed more than two dozen entries this year. Only a select few received awards after being evaluated on design quality, detailing, materials, craftsmanship and contribution to local character.

The Beckett’s North Elevation, facing Woodbury Park Road, was highlighted for its integration into the surrounding streetscape.

David Wright, Chair of the Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic Society Awards judging panel, says: “The Awards are an important way of encouraging and recognising quality design and architecture, key factors in shaping the future of any town, and especially vital in a place with the historic character of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

“The Award for The Beckett’s North Elevation celebrates the thoughtful design that reflects the local architecture. The choice of materials and the quality of detailing demonstrate a clear sensitivity to the town’s historic context, creating a building that contributes positively to its surroundings.”

Gavin Stein, CEO of Elysian Residences, adds: “It’s an honour to receive the Award from the Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic Society and encouraging to see Elysian’s attention to design and finish being recognised by the community in which The Beckett stands.

“We are committed to creating exceptional buildings and communities, that not only enhance the lives of those living in them, but also complement and contribute positively to their surroundings and the wider community.”
