Smart Compliance shortlisted for ICA Compliance Awards

Smart Compliance has been shortlisted for Compliance Consultancy Firm of the Year at the ICA Compliance Awards Europe 2026 as regulatory pressure on estate and letting agents continues to intensify.

The firm, part of Lifetime Legal, is the only AML compliance provider in the UK property sector to guarantee it will cover any HMRC fine resulting from its own error.
The shortlisting places Smart Compliance alongside major financial services consultancies, highlighting growing recognition of specialist compliance support within the property sector. The awards ceremony will take place on 25 June at Park Plaza London Westminster Bridge.

The recognition comes at a time of heightened enforcement activity from HM Revenue and Customs, with estate agents facing increasing scrutiny around anti-money laundering (AML) compliance.

AML GUIDANCE

Around 80% of UK property transactions are handled by small, owner-managed agencies, many of which lack the internal resource to keep pace with evolving regulatory requirements. Recent changes include expanded AML guidance, new financial sanctions checks for letting agents, and increased audit activity.

Smart Compliance’s model combines proprietary technology with a team of 170 advisers to deliver end-to-end compliance support. Its “Tech and Touch” approach includes tools such as its Business Risk Indicator Document Generator, alongside integrations with platforms including Reapit.

Since launching in 2023, the business has grown to support more than 500 estate agency firms, carrying out due diligence on over 140,000 transactions in 2025 and generating revenues in excess of £10m.

UNDER PRESSURE

Rob Sendall (main picture), CEO of Smart Compliance, says: “The ICA shortlisting is recognition that what we have built genuinely works – and that it matters.

“Estate agents are under real pressure right now. HMRC enforcement is increasing, the guidance keeps changing, and most agents are trying to manage that alongside running a busy sales or lettings business.

“Our job is to make sure compliance is one thing they never have to worry about. We stand behind every case we touch, and this shortlisting reflects the commitment of our entire team to getting that right.”

DIFFICULT CASES

He adds: “Most compliance providers give agents a system and leave them to get on with it.

“We think that’s the wrong model for this sector. Estate agents need a partner that takes genuine ownership – that turns up to the audit, handles the difficult cases, and is accountable for the outcome. That’s what we’ve built, and that’s what this recognition reflects.”
