Listed former church with Sunday school up for sale at online auction

An impressive former Baptist church complete with the usual ecclesiastical fixtures and fittings together with a fully equipped Sunday school is on offer at auction.

The building, in the desirable Maindee area of the city of Newport, is a fine example of a grade II listed church.
Summerhill Baptist Church, at 62 Albert Avenue, Newport is being sold through South Wales based Paul Fosh Auctions.

The guide price is £145,000.

Auctioneer Gemma Vaughan says: “The former church itself provides 6,000 sq. ft. of space and the additional Sunday school building adds a further 3,400 sq. ft.

“The commanding former church consists of a lobby area, the main sanctuary and balcony which includes wooden pews and the organ.

“There is a breath-taking variety of marvellous stained-glass windows and fixtures which are well-preserved and appear to be undamaged.”

The church includes a basement area with various rooms, a main hall with timber sprung floors and a kitchen.

Vaughn adds: “The Sunday school, which is located to the rear of the chapel, offers a central hall with stage and also has a variety of classrooms, seven in number, to three sides of the main hall. There are toilets on each of the floors.

“Beyond the school, there are gardens which also provide pedestrian access to Victoria Avenue.

“Both buildings are served by gas central heating. The masonry walls with tiled roofs have a variety of timber and double-glazed windows and doors.”
