Leeds City Council planning staff arrested in corruption probe

Four members of Leeds City Council’s planning department have been arrested as part of an ongoing police investigation into suspected corruption, according to BBC sources.

West Yorkshire Police have also detained five additional individuals in connection with alleged bribery offences.
A spokesperson for Leeds City Council confirmed to the broadcaster that the arrested employees have been suspended from their roles while the investigation continues. However, the council declined to provide further details at this time.

The police stated that their Economic Crime Unit is leading a “complex investigation” into the alleged corruption. All nine individuals have been released on bail while inquiries proceed.

STAFF SUSPENDED

In a brief statement, the council said: “We can confirm that four council staff members have been arrested. They have been suspended in line with our established policies and procedures. As the police investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment further.”

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police added: “Our Economic Crime Unit is conducting a complex investigation into reported corruption offences in West Yorkshire. Nine people, including four staff members from Leeds City Council, have been arrested on suspicion of bribery offences. All have been bailed pending further inquiries.”

The investigation remains active, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the suspected offences.
