Football legend and former Turnham Primary School pupil Ian Wright returned to his old school to open a brand-new library – made possible by the support of The Acorn Group estate agents and ABC Book Club.
The Acorn Group, which includes Acorn, Langford Russell and John Payne, has backed ABC Book Club since 2018, collecting pre-loved children’s books through its 38 branches across South East London and North Kent.
Their ongoing support has helped ABC Book Club build over 30 school libraries, ensuring more children have access to quality books.
Turnham Academy’s new fairground-themed library is the latest success story.
RIBBON CUTTING
Wright (main picture), who has previously gifted the school an all-weather football pitch, was delighted to cut the ribbon and encourage pupils to embrace reading.

And telling the kids with a Bob Marley song and a Waka Waka dance he said: “Read every day, no matter what.”
Kevin Ashton, Branch Manager of Acorn Brockley, attended the opening and praised the school’s commitment to literacy.

He said: “Turnham Academy prioritises reading and their students’ futures, and we are proud to have contributed to such an inspiring project.”
ABSOLUTE PLEASURE
Jo Chandler, Head of Operations at ABC Book Club, highlighted the importance of these initiatives.
“It was an absolute pleasure building a library at Turnham Academy. It’s an incredible school with a wonderful community, and I know this space will be used, loved, and appreciated.”
