Former London penthouse of music legend Mick Jagger where he partied with Marianne Faithfull and Keith Richards hits market

The former London home of music legend Mick Jagger, where he partied with girlfriend Marianne Faithfull and bandmate Keith Richards is for sale via joint sole selling agents Beauchamp Estates and Prime London.

The 2,495 sq.ft. (231.79 sq.m.) four-bedroom sub-penthouse, located at Harley House in Marylebone sits directly adjacent to Regent’s Park.
Offered for sale for the first time in 30 years Mick Jagger’s former sub-penthouse is located on the fourth floor of Harley House, a landmark Edwardian mansion building on the Marylebone Road, designed by architects Edward Boehmer and Percey Christian Gibbs and built in 1903-1904.

During the Edwardian era Harley House housed a Catholic institution providing lodgings for Irish migrants who had moved to London to work as servants for wealthy families living in the grand houses of Regent’s Park and Marylebone.

UPMARKET LATERAL APARTMENTS

After World War Two the building was remodelled into upmarket lateral apartments complete with a passenger lift and ground floor foyer with concierge / porter.

Providing luxurious and spacious living in the heart of London, with large principal rooms and ceiling heights of up to 3.12 metres (10ft), the rock legend’s pad is a vast lateral residence spanning the entire depth of the grand apartment building.

SEX DRUGS AND AMBITION

Mick Jagger’s life at Harley House has been reviewed by his biographer Chris Salewicz, the author of Mick & Keith: Parallel Lines (2003), and the sub-penthouse exposes a racy story of new wealth, sex, drugs and high ambition.

The Rolling Stones was founded in 1962 by vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, instrumentalist Brian Jones, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts.

The success of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Get Off My Cloud” released in 1965 enabled Mick Jagger in early 1966 to take a lease on the sub-penthouse at Harley House, which was close to the clinic of his Harley Street doctor.

Whilst he was having the apartment refurbished Jagger had portrait photos by Gered Mankowitz taken in the drawing room and via the fire escape Jagger accessed the roof of Harley House where he had photographs of himself taken in a new fur coat.

HIPPIE-BOHEMIAN STYLE

By the summer of 1966 the apartment had been remodelled in a hippie-bohemian style and Jagger started dating singer Marianne Faithfull.

Celebrated for her trailblazing music and acting career, Faithfull was not just a Stones girlfriend and muse but also became an icon in her own right.

By December 1966 Faithfull had become a regular fixture in the apartment and on Christmas Eve Jagger removed the belongings of his previous girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton and dumped them in the foyer of the building for her to collect.

During Jagger’s time at Harley House The Rolling Stones released “Paint it Black” (1966), “Aftermath” (1966) and “Ruby Tuesday” / “Lets Spend the Night Together” released in 1967.

ROYAL CONNECTION

From early 1967 Keith Richards became a regular guest at Jagger’s apartment and after heavy parties he would crash out there for a few days at a time.

Another one of Jagger’s most famous house party guests during this period was HRH Princess Margaret. At the end of one party at the apartment Jagger audibly fantasised to Faithfull about having sex with Richards who was crashed out in the guest bedroom next door.

In February 1967 the News of the World newspaper alleged that Jagger had taken LSD and the apartment building was surrounded by photographers from around the world. In March 1967, Jagger did a photoshoot with Colin Jones in the entrance hall of the apartment dressed in a vibrant vintage military unform along with photos taken in his drawing room/hippie lounge.

SHOPPING TRIPS

When not producing or performing music Jagger and Faithfull would leave Harley House for shopping trips to Harrods and lunches at San Lorenzo on nearby Beauchamp Place.

During 1968 Jagger was filmed for his role as a rock star for the movie Performance, released in 1970. In January 1968 Jagger’s time at Harley House came to a close when he purchased an apartment in Chester Square in Belgravia into which he and Faithfull moved, the couple splitting in May 1970.

ROCK ROYALTY

Now the sub-penthouse that has hosted both rock royalty and real Royalty is for sale.
