First Zero Bills homes launched for sale in Wales

The first homes in Wales where residents will pay no energy bills for a decade have gone on sale in Cardiff, marking a milestone in the UK’s transition to sustainable housing.

Delivered through a partnership between Octopus Energy and Wates Residential, the four properties in Willowbrook North are guaranteed to have zero energy costs for 10 years, supported by Octopus’s smart “Zero Bills” tariff.
The scheme combines solar panels, a heat pump and battery storage to eliminate household energy charges.

The launch forms part of the Cardiff Living programme, a long-standing partnership between Wates Residential and Cardiff Council to tackle fuel poverty and deliver sustainable homes. It also coincides with the Welsh Government opening a consultation on proposals to make solar panels and low-carbon heating systems standard in all new builds.

ZERO BILL HOMES

Octopus Energy has set a target of delivering 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030. The initiative, which began in 2022, has already been expanded to Germany, New Zealand and multiple sites in England.

More than 5,000 homes have so far been approved as Zero Bills-eligible across tenures, from affordable rent to private ownership.
