Owners of high-value homes are being urged to take extra precautions over the Christmas period as the combination of seasonal travel, darker evenings and visible signs of wealth creates heightened risks of burglary.
Stanhope, the specialist insurer for high-value properties, says the festive season remains one of the most attractive times of year for criminals, particularly when homes are left unoccupied for extended periods.
The firm warns that large properties are often easier to identify and more likely to contain valuable items, making them prime targets during winter months.
Industry data supports the concern. According to figures cited by security firm Keyways Fire & Security, burglary rates typically rise by around 25 to 30% during winter, with activity peaking in December and January. Reduced daylight hours, poor weather and predictable routines all make it easier for criminals to operate without attracting attention.
TELL-TALE SIGNS

Matthew Ashton, Director at Stanhope, reckons that high-value homes often advertise their appeal unintentionally.
He says: “High value homes are easy to identify thanks to tell-tale signs of wealth on display for all to see; an expensive car on the driveway, a beautifully manicured garden or expensive tech, like large televisions or other devices, visible through the windows.
“Christmas is also one of the most popular times for people to travel away for days or even weeks, for the holidays, often leaving their homes empty and vulnerable. When properties are unattended the opportunities for burglars increase significantly.”
REDUCE RISK
Stanhope says homeowners should consider combining modern security technology with specialist insurance to reduce risk.
Smart security systems that provide real-time alerts and remote monitoring allow owners to keep track of their properties while away, while access controls can limit entry to trusted individuals.
The firm also recommends 24-hour monitoring services capable of responding immediately to suspicious activity.
DIGITAL PROTECTION
However, Stanhope cautions that digital protection is as important as physical defences.
As more homes adopt connected devices, unsecured networks can provide criminals with another route in, making cybersecurity an increasingly important part of home protection.
Ashton adds: “Don’t let home security concerns overshadow festive celebrations. Reduce the chances of problems by prioritising home security during the holiday season.
“Combining advanced technology with specialist insurance can significantly lower risk and help protect what matters most, even when nobody is home. Stay secure this festive season.”
