An island off Plymouth named after Sir Francis Drake is being put up for sale. Drake’s Island, so-called because the Elizabethan explorer set sail from there in 1577 to circumnavigate the globe, covers six acres and lies only 600 yards off the mainland in Plymouth Sound.
Morgan Phillips, its present owner, has appointed property agents at Carter Jonas to find a buyer for the historic fortress. Phillips, a local businessman, bought the island in 2019 for £6 million and it is understood there is no guide price.
DREAMS TO LIFE
He told the Daily Mail: “As so many of us know, conditions have altered over the past five years, and due to recent changes, I am seeking someone to take over and bring these dreams to life more quickly than I could.”
He added that he hopes to “pass on the baton” to someone who is “passionate about the island’s surroundings and can realise its potential”.
