Blast from the 1920s past of motoring in Stoke-on-Trent coming up at auction

A former spares and repairs workshop (main picture) in Stoke that harks back to the halcyon days of motoring in the 1920s is coming up for sale in Bond Wolfe’s next auction.

What used to be known as Broadway Motors used to be based at 35 Liverpool Road in the town and the firm’s old premises will appear in the livestreamed auction on Wednesday 27 March with a guide price* of £25,000+.

The painted name of the old company still adorns the front of the building in what looks like its original style with ‘Motor cars’ and ‘Motor cycles’ painted next to it, above a racing green coloured first floor.

REGULAR FOCUS

This original façade, thought to date back to when Broadway Motors was established at the location in 1923, has been a regular focus for artists and photographers fascinated by the motoring history it represents.

Gupreet Bassi, Bond WolfeGupreet Bassi, Bond WolfeGurpreet Bassi, chief executive of Bond Wolfe, says: “I’m often thrilled by some of the properties that come up for auction with us, and this ghostlike blast from the past almost gives you a shiver when you look at it.

“In one way, it’s simply a two-storey former workshop premises containing a retail and workshop area to the ground floor with extra accommodation above.”

LOCAL LANDMARK

And he adds: “But what looks like it’s originally designed exterior is a local landmark that is so interesting that some buyers might even want to preserve it.”

Bassi adds: “This freehold property extends to approximately 1,847 sq ft and may be suitable for a variety of uses, subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents.”
