Angela Rayner has been appointed Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and will also take on the role of Deputy Prime Minister.
Rayner was promoted to shadow levelling up, housing and communities secretary, replacing Lisa Nandy, in September last year.
As expected Rachel Reeves was appointed as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer but almost instantly issued a damning assessment of the state of the UK’s finances.
DEPLETED ECONOMY
Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the ExchequerShe told the BBC that she was inheriting a depleted economy from the Conservatives that would create a ‘challenge’ for the new Labour government.
“There’s not a huge amount of money there,” Ms Reeves told the BBC. “I know the scale of the challenge I inherit.”
Reeves said she would lean on the private sector to cover the shortfall.
“Private-sector investment is the lifeblood of a successful economy. We need to unlock private-sector investment,” she said.
In June last year Rayner (main picture) launched an attack on letting agents and landlords claiming the party will be the ‘champion’ of renters.
She told The Independent that tenants would be much better off under a Labour government, with a ban on Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions and an end to ‘rental bidding wars’.
Nandy, meanwhile, has been appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
